Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia

At the heart of Kinta Valley. The capital city of the state of Perak. An opposition stronghold. Factory of brilliant people. Desolated through emigration of its inhabitants to other parts of the country and overseas. Yet... it is forever remembered by its people.

News from Wong Siew Wei, got from my email, 11.34 am, 8th April
Hey frens…..today was my first day of the practical training. So, I would like to share some of my experiences with u all. Initially, this email is intended to send to my coursemates....So, if u find ths email is irrelevant, just bear with me,ok? Thanx....I went to work at the Jabatan Kesihatan Ipoh at 8:00am, there were 4 of us all together….2 foodtech students and two QC students…..The foodtech students are Lim Kit Yee and Lily and the two QC students are Farah and i….Actually, I dun know those foodtech students….but I thnk we adapted well with each other….they are quite friendly whereas I’m more passive and quiet……

So, the Mr.Thayalan that I told u b4…..he gave us some briefing and he is such a nice guy…..i heard that he was also a foodtech graduate frm UPM….and the only Food technologist in the whole of Perak who hold such a high post….He is the Penolong Ketua Pengarah at the State Health Department J

Anyway, our training programme is quite funny……for one month, we will be attached to Dewan Bandaraya Ipoh to do whatever that involved food…..EXCEPT WORKING IN LAB!! I really dun know what to say….coz we really cant work in the lab due to some technical problems….

Anyway, I think that it is also a blessing from God ….i said ths bcos our jobs are rather interesting….we got to run here and there…visit many places J That would include….food sampling – which means we take the food sample from the hawker stalls or end products from factories and send it to the lab, throughout the process, we must maintain the temperature and procedures.

We will also visit to the food factories ( ice-cream, kicap, roti, can drinks, biscuit, bihun, mee segera, etc) we got to observe the operation flow from raw material to the end products….

This Saturday, we will be doin an inspection to the wet market/ pasar tani at the Stadium. Anyway, I’m not so sure of what we’ll be doin there….maybe more to sanitation and hygienic inspection of the hawker stalls.

We will be doin ‘rampasan stock’ at supermarkets like Makro and Parkson Grand…actually it’s more like checking stocks of their expiry dates and the condition of the cans according to the Food Act and Food Law…..if they didn’t fulfill the Food Act and Food Law, it can be charged and brought the case to the court. Such a pity bcos I should have taken the subject Food Act and Food Law from Dr. Yazid ths sem…then, I will know better J

The officer who will supervise us will be Mr. Manisegaran….he is a nice guy too JHe has taken good care of us and tried to fight for us so that we can wear jeans to work….if not, we’ll hav to wear long skirts during all those outings…..even pants is forbidden!! Then, in the evening, he gave us some booklets, documents to read….Hey, I got to look at our Seniors’ Report….So, we got a rough idea on how to do it…..job will be a lot more easier J

So, after one month, we’ll go back to the State Health Dept….Then maybe we’ll hav the chance to deal with lab works….We’ll also learn more about HACCP…..Frens., Mr.Thayalan told us that HACCP is really important…so, u all must take extra knowledge of it also J

So, that’s all for 2day, 2moro, we’ll be visiting the ice-cream factory…J looking forward for that…Hey, one more thing….We can start work at 9am J I AM REALLY SO HAPPY…..CAN WORK UP A BIT LATE IN THE MORNING....
